Spring turkey season is fast approaching, but there is still plenty of time to plant food plots. The Firminator series supplies land managers with the tools for successful preparation and a bountiful hunting season.

Turkeys are naturally attracted to openings, where they can feed on tender green forage, and gobblers can display to prospective mates. Openings as small as a suburban lawn and even wooded roads are suitable if there is enough sunlight to promote growth. It is easier to start in an existing opening, and with proper weight and disc angle adjustment, the Firminator’s disc assembly can cut through tough sod and thatch.

Cover crops like wheat or rye are fast-growing, relatively easy, and inexpensive to plant because they require less soil preparation and can tolerate wide moisture, temperature, and pH regimes. Much the same applies to grain crops like oats, which will also provide a fall and winter food source. When it comes to attracting turkeys, few plants can beat clover.

Clover plots require more advanced attention in soil preparation and treatment, but perennial plots will persist for several seasons. The best plan for early spring planting is to utilize a blend or mix of seeds. A cover crop of wheat will protect young clover while it gets established. Chufa is another popular choice for turkeys, but the nut-like tubers do not mature until fall, so they will not be attractive until the following spring – if there are any left. Depending on climate and location, it is usually best to plant at least 2 – 4 weeks before turkey season. Early planting allows plants to germinate and become established before the birds become habituated to visiting plots.

For those with a tractor and larger, accessible sites, discing, seeding, and packing is the best option for the first planting on a new site.
