Is It Time to Go Cellular?

Have you entered the world of cellular trail cameras that deliver wildlife images directly to your phone? In the past two years, I’ve been using three brands of cellular trail cameras and begin each day with a quick peek at what’s going on at five hunting sites.  It’s great to see a nice buck in an image, but I get much more intel, year-round.  Have other hunters or scouters been by my stands?  What about predators?  Are bears, coyotes, and bobcats passing by?  How is my mineral site doing?  The newest cameras have “live view” which allows you to click a camera and see what is going on at any time of day.

Vosker (Spypoint)

When cellular cameras first emerged, Vosker, a Canadian company, offered two models as security cameras, advertising that they featured a built-in solar panel and were designed for use in remote areas.  Despite their industrial purpose, they sounded like wildlife cameras to me.  The image quality was not as good as that of traditional trail cameras. Still, I was able to capture an unlimited number of images without needing to change batteries for a year.  These cameras are offered to hunters under the Spypoint brand, and I have been very pleased with their performance.

Stealth Cam Revolver 360

If you want to cover a wide area and be sure that nothing passes by unnoticed, the Stealth Cam Revolver 360 is a great option.  I’ve used this camera over the past two years, and it covers 100% of a ridge top that I hunt.  Any creature, including humans, that crosses the horizon is captured for my review and examination.  I have the camera mounted on a tree, which reduces the visibility to 180 degrees, yet that is sufficient to monitor the entire ridgeline.  With so many images captured, it makes sense to buy an unlimited cellular plan.

Stealth Cam 4K

As I was writing this post, I received a press release about the newest camera from Stealth Cam.  Here’s a quick summary:

The Spectre 4K Dual-Core Cellular Trail Camera is a field and security-ready trail cam unlike any other on the market. Featuring advanced dual-core processing, it enables simultaneous image capture and wireless upload, giving users real-time access to 40MP photos and stunning 4K ultra-HD video with crisp, clear audio. The camera’s innovative dual image sensors, one optimized for daytime image quality and the other for nighttime image quality, ensure every capture is delivered in impeccable detail around the clock, regardless of the hour.

Free 4K ultra-HD image downloads provide a cost-effective option, eliminating the need for extra data or subscription plans while offering high-resolution, 4K images anytime, from anywhere. Even in low-light conditions, captures reveal precise details, making it easier for hunters to identify target animal features, people, vehicles, and more, while enhancing game management and hunting strategies throughout the season.

Stealth Cam’s recently introduced On Demand Live Stream functionality allows users to remotely trigger and instantly receive media captures day and night via the Command Pro app* with the push of a button. Plus, 32GB of internal memory storage delivers a stable, secure location for accessing and viewing captures without the need for an SD card.

MOULTRIE DIGITAL CAMERA

Moultrie Edge Pro-

Moultrie has just launched its new cameras for 2025 and is offering last year’s models on sale for less than $60 from several merchants.  If you want to get started in cellular monitoring, you won’t find a better deal.  The new models feature built-in memory, eliminating the need for a media card. You can also connect to the best network by scanning a QR code with your cell phone.  That is the most straightforward set-up I have experienced.  My Moultrie Edge camera was stolen, but newer models come with GPS location built in.  Should yours be stolen, you will know precisely where it is.

Overall Experience

Cellular cameras are an excellent tool for hunting, especially when targeting deer.  By watching deer in your area all summer, you can easily identify antler development and anticipate deer movements.  Research has repeatedly shown that the first time you hunt a stand is the best, and you can match a location with a quality deer and the best wind direction to make that first post count.  Just as planting food for deer and establishing mineral sites help you enjoy “hunting” year-round, a cellular camera gives you a glimpse into your hunting area never possible before.
