Early-season hunts will take hunters to areas with warmer climates. Scent control and proper trophy care are crucial for a successful hunt. This fall, I plan to hunt in Kentucky for a velvet buck. From my previous experiences, I know that I need a powerful scent killer on hand, as well as products to preserve my trophy if I manage to tag one. Here are some essential products I will be taking with me on my hunt.
Scent Control
Scent control is crucial during early-season hunts. Warm temperatures, humidity, and thermal currents can make scent management challenging, but Scent Thief products are effective in combating these issues. Scent Thief’s patented No-Smell Technology capitalizes on an animal’s instinctive response to danger. The key products I am bringing with me are the Body Wash and Shampoo Cleanse, the Field Spray, the Whackstick, and the Wafers.
I will use the Body Wash and Shampoo Cleanse as my base layer of protection. Next, I will apply the Field Spray to my clothing, face, and hat, ensuring that everything is thoroughly covered. The Whackstick is a new addition, but I believe it will be effective as well. I can apply the Whackstick to trees for extra scent protection. Finally, I plan to hang the Wafers in the tree with me. I can periodically spray the Wafers with the Field Spray to maintain continuous scent protection. Scent Thief has been my go-to for achieving successful scent control, which is why I’ll be bringing it with me to Kentucky.
VelvaLok
Velvet Antler Technologies provides the best solution for preserving velvet antlers. Since I plan to harvest a velvet buck, I will bring a bottle of VelvaLok with me. VelvaLok is easy to apply and effectively preserves the velvet on the buck’s antlers within 72 hours. The product is non-toxic, and no special tools are required to preserve my trophy.
HideLok
I’m bringing another product from Antler Technologies on my hunting trip: HideLok. Due to the warm temperatures during early-season hunts, proper care of the hide is crucial if I want to mount my trophy. To preserve the hide, I will immediately cape out the buck and spray the inside of the cape, as well as the inside of the ears, nose, and mouth. This will keep the hide in good condition for several days without needing to freeze it. After applying the HideLok spray, I will roll up the hide and place it in a garbage bag to keep it dry.
It has always been my dream to harvest a velvet buck, and I’m excited to travel to Kentucky for the opening week of archery season. I’m confident that Scent Thief will help keep me undetected by any bucks. If luck is on my side and I manage to shoot a velvet buck, I’ll have the right products on hand to protect the velvet and prevent the hair on the hide from slipping. If you have an early-season hunt planned for this fall, I recommend checking out these products before you head out.
